Spring Intern Diaries: Entry #2

amanda photoIt’s been three weeks since I began my internship at Rountree Communications. Throughout these weeks, I have acquired new skills and knowledge that will help advance my career in the PR industry.

Each day I come in prepared to learn new skills and lessons. Lindsay keeps me busy by asking me to research the needs of a client, pitch campaign ideas, market on social media channels and write content such as blogs and press releases.

During my time at Rountree Communications, I have learned the importance of research in this industry. I begin each day by reading newsletters from local media outlets and seeing if these articles could relate to a client in any way.  I have also had to research our clients’ target audiences by looking at blogs, social media and community groups.

Last week, Lindsay helped me begin an assignment for the Southern Ideal Home Show. The assignment involves working with bloggers to promote the show and offer tickets to giveaway. This campaign will be mine for its duration – it’s very exciting to be in charge of something that will benefit a client. So far this project has helped me learn the importance of perseverance and tailoring pitches to fit a blogger’s style and content.

Additionally, I have had the opportunity to work with several clients’ social media outlets including Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter and Craigslist. Working on several social media channels simultaneously has showed me the importance of creating and establishing a brand that is consistent across the board.

Lastly, I’ve learned that writing is the most important skill in PR! So far I’ve written blog posts, press releases, event listings and social media content. In order to be successful in this industry, good writing skills are vital.

I’ll be back in another week or two to update you on more. So long for now!
